Surah al Qadr is called The Power, or The Fate’ in English. It’s in the Juz number 30 and consists of only five verses.
What does surah al Qadr mean?
First of all here’s the English translation of Surah al Qadr:
“Verily, we have sent it down in the Night of Al-Qadr
And What will make you know what the Night of Al-Qadr is?
The Night of Al-Qadr is better than a thousand months.
Therein descend the angels and the Ruh by their Lord’s permission with every matter.
There is peace until the appearance of dawn.”
The surah talks about the importance of the night of power; it is the night that changes our fate. This surah shows us the signs of the night of power which are:
Signs of Laylatul Qadr:
What happens on the night of Laylatul Qadr? Well, here are the signs of Laylatul Qadr:
1- When the sun rises in the morning it will have no rays.
From Ubayy, (RA), who said that the Prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) said: “On the morning following Laylatul-Qadr the sun rises not having any rays, as if it were a brass dish until it rises up.” [Muslim, Abu Dawud, Tirmithi and Ibn Majah]
2- It will be a calm and pleasant night:
Ibn ‘Abbaas (RA), said that the Prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) said: “Lailatul-Qadr is calm and pleasant, neither hot nor cold, the sun arises on its morning being feeble and red.” [ Ibn Khuzaimah and al-Bazzaar with a Hasan Isnad]
3- The taste of the seawater will be sweet:
One Sahaabi, Ab’da bin Abi Lubaaba says: “On the evening of the 27th, I tasted the water of the sea and it was sweet.”Ayub bin Khalid said: ‘I once had to bathe myself with seawater, and on tasting it, found, it sweet. This was on the 23rd night.”
4- Rain might fall during the night or during the day that night.
5- The sky will be clear or slightly foggy.
6- The sky is lighted with no reflection and rays.
When was surah Qadr revealed?
It is one of the first surahs revealed to the prophet at Makkah.
Where was surah al Qadr revealed?
It was revealed in the early times at Makkah.
How many times to read surah Qadr?
You can read it 7 times on the night of power so that Allah forgives all the sins that you have committed in the past.
Also, it should be read every day before going to bed seven times to heal us from any disease and prevent poverty.
When to read surah Qadr?
You can read it any time, also the scholars of Islam recommend reading surah Qadar seven times in the night of Laylatul Qadr to ask Allah for forgiveness.
Why was surah Qadr revealed?
Qadr surah was revealed in the month of Ramadan to emphasize its importance. It is said that one day the prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) had a dream of Banu Ummaya standing on his Minber, and he became sad. In order to encourage the prophet, Allah revealed this Surah to him.
Is surah Qadr Makki or Madani?
The surah is a Makki surah.
Benefits of Surah Qadr
Reading this surah saves us from Poverty in wealth, health, or any other problem. So we should read it 7 times every day before going to bed.
Also reciting this surah in the month of Ramadan purifies one’s heart.
It is also said that reading surah al-Qadr one time before sleeping will keep us safe.
Reading it after performing wudu one time counts us as one of the Siddiqeen. Reading it twice after wudu will count its reciter as Martyrs. And who recite it three times after wudu will be with the prophet in the day of judgment.
Reading Surah Qadr three times before going to bed will save us from the evil whispers.
Also reading it seven times daily will light the grave of its reciter after his death.
It’s also said that reciting it while looking at the sky will prevent your eyesight from weakening.
What is the main theme of surah Qadr?
The main theme of this surah is to signify the importance of laylatul Qadr, telling us its signs and how peaceful this night is. Also, the surah shows us that the Quran was revealed in the night of power.
How many verses are in surah laylatul Qadr?
There are only five verses in Surah Surah Qadr.
Surah Qadr in Arabic Text
إِنَّآ أَنزَلْنَٰهُ فِى لَيْلَةِ ٱلْقَدْرِ
وَمَآ أَدْرَىٰكَ مَا لَيْلَةُ ٱلْقَدْرِ
لَيْلَةُ ٱلْقَدْرِ خَيْرٌ مِّنْ أَلْفِ شَهْرٍ
تَنَزَّلُ ٱلْمَلَٰٓئِكَةُ وَٱلرُّوحُ فِيهَا بِإِذْنِ رَبِّهِم مِّن كُلِّ أَمْرٍ
سَلَٰمٌ هِىَ حَتَّىٰ مَطْلَعِ ٱلْفَجْرِ
Transliteration in English
Inna anzalnahu fee laylatil qadr
Wama adraaka ma laylatul qadr
Laylatul qadr khayrun min alfi shahr
Tanazzalul malaikatu warroohu feeha bi izni rabbihim min kulli amr
Salamun hiya hatta matlail fajr
Translation in English
Indeed, ˹it’s˺ We ˹Who˺ sent this ˹Quran˺ down on the Night of Glory
And what will make you realize what the Night of Glory is?
The Night of Glory is better than a thousand months
That night the angels and the ˹holy˺ spirit descend, by the permission of their Lord, for every ˹decreed˺ matter
It is all peace until the break of dawn
Which surah to read on laylatul qadr?
One of the best Surahs to recite on the night of power is sura Qadr, recited in the night for its amazing benefits and virtues.
The Messenger of Allah (pbuh) has said that one who recites it is regarded (by the Almighty) as though he fasted the month of Ramadan and spent Laylatul Qadr adoring his Maker.
Imam Ja’faras-Sadiq (pbuh) is quoted saying that whoever recites this Chapter in one of the obligatory prayers will be addressed: “O servant of Allah! Your past sins have been forgiven, so resume your good deed!” And he (pbuh) has also said, “Whoever recites it audibly will be like one raising his sword in defense of Islam, and if he recites it silently will be regarded as though he died a martyr for the cause of Islam, and if someone recites it ten (10) times, a thousand of his sins will be forgiven.”
Imam Ali (pbuh) has said that “…everything has a treasure, and the treasure of the poor is al-Qadr. Everything has a helper, and the helper of the weak is al-Qadr. Everything has ease, and the ease of those in difficulty is al-Qadr. Everything has a chief and the chief of knowledge is al-Qadr…”
Hadith on al Qadr surah
Aisha (RA) reported: That the Messenger of Allah (SAW), said, “Search for the Night of Decree in the odd nights among the last ten nights of Ramadan.”
Anas ibn Malik (RA) reported: The Messenger of Allah (SAW), said when the month of Ramadan began, “Verily, this month has presented itself to you. There is a night within it that is better than a thousand months. Whoever is deprived of it has been deprived of all good. None is deprived of its good but that he is truly deprived.”
Aisha (RA) reported: I said, “O Messenger of Allah if I know which night is the Night of Decree, what should I say during it?” The Messenger of Allah (SAW) said, “Say: O Allah, You are pardoning. You love to forgive, so forgive me.”
Supplication during the night of decree
On the night of decree, one should spend his time praying Qiyaam, Asking Allah for forgiveness, reciting Quran sending Salawat (blessings upon the Prophet), and wishing for everything he wants.
Laylatul Qadr dua
When Lady Aisha (may Allah be well pleased with her) asked the Prophet (peace be upon him) “O Messenger of Allah if it is Laylatul Qadr, then what should I supplicate with?” he replied with the famous dua: “Allahumma, innaka Afuwwun Karimun, tuḥibbu al-afwa fa‘afu anna” – “O Allah, indeed You are Pardoning and Generous; You love to pardon, so pardon us.”

The Prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) said: “Whosoever stands up for prayer during Laylatul Qadr, believing in and expecting his reward from Allah Almighty, his past sins will be forgiven.” [ Agreed upon.]
So, make sure to pray Qiyaam.
Also, Aisha reported that she said to the Prophet: “O Prophet of Allah! If I am blessed to witness Laylatul Qadr, what should be my prayer?” The Prophet replied: “Say: ‘Allahumma innaka afuwwun tuhibbul ‘afwa fa’fu ‘anni’,”
meaning: O Allah Almighty! You are Oft-Forgiving and You love Forgiveness. Please forgive me. [ Source: Tirmidhi.]
