Why was surah Nasr revealed? | Noor Academy

One of the shortest surahs in the holy Quran is surah Nasr, why was it revealed? When it was revealed and where? Let’s find out.

Why was surah Nasr revealed? The surah shows that in the future Muslims will be victorious in the conquest of Mecca. Allah asks his prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) to thank him through glorifying Him and ask for forgiveness for the upcoming victory.

Surah an Nasr is the surah number 110 in the holy Quran and the number 102 in the order of revelation.

Here are the verses of the surah with English translations:
إِذَا جَآءَ نَصْرُ ٱللَّهِ وَٱلْفَتْحُ ١

When Allah’s ˹ultimate˺ help comes and the victory ˹over Mecca is achieved˺,

and you ˹O Prophet˺ see the people embracing Allah’s Way in crowds,

then glorify the praises of your Lord and seek His forgiveness, for certainly, He is ever Accepting of Repentance.”

What is the meaning of An-Nasr?
Al Nasr surah is called Nasr after its first verse. The word An-Nasr means “help” and “support (divine).”

 Where was surah Nasr revealed?

Surah Al Nasr was revealed to the Prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) during his residence in Madinah. It’s the second shortest surah in the holy Quran after surah Kawthar.
When was surah Nasr revealed?
There are different opinions on when the surah was revealed. However, it’s said that surah Nasar was revealed after the Hijrah to Madinah. From the following hadiths, the scholars said that the surah was revealed during the farewell pilgrimage in the 10th year after Hijrah.

It was the last surah revealed to the Prophet (peace and blessing be upon him). The messenger of Allah died after three months after the farewell pilgrimage.
Abdullah bin Abbas radhiAllahu ‘anhu narrated, “Surah An-Nasr is the last revealed Surah of the Qur’an, i.e., There was no complete Surah sent to the Prophet Muhammad Sallallahu ‘Alayhi wa Sallam after it.”

Ibn Abbas radhiAllahu ‘anhu said: “when ALLAH revealed this Surah, the Prophet salAllahu ‘Alayhi wa Sallam said that ALLAH has now informed him the time of his death had approached.”
Why was surah Nasr revealed?
Surah Nassr was revealed to tell the prophet Muhammad (peace and blessing be upon him) that Islam will win and that many people will enter the religion. The surahs show the prophet that his mission succeeded.

Then Allah asks the prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) to Glorify him and ask for forgiveness as a sign of gratitude.
Why the surah is called Nasr?
The surah took its name from the first verse:

إِذَا جَآءَ نَصْرُ ٱللَّهِ وَٱلْفَتْحُ ١
When Allah’s ˹ultimate˺ help comes and the victory ˹over Mecca is achieved˺,”

The meaning of the word Al-Nasr is” Help,” and “(Divine) Support.”
Is surah al nasr Makki or Madani?
Surah An-Nasr is the surah number 110 in the holy Quran, with only three verses, and it falls in the last juz of the Quran, juz 30. It was revealed to the Prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) during his residence in Madinah. Therefore, it is a Madani surah.

 Surah an Nasr benefits.

Reading Quran in general has many benefits and rewards for the reader. And here are some of the benefits of reading surah an-Nasr:
It was narrated by Imam Ahmad that Aisha said:  “The Messenger of Allah, may Allah prayers and peace be upon him, used to frequently say before his death: (Glory be to Allah and praise be to Him, I seek Allah forgiveness and repent to Him) She said: I said: O Messenger of Allah, you have often prayed. He said: (Indeed, my Lord, the Exalted, the Majestic, has informed me that He will show me knowledge in my ummah, so command me if I see that knowledge, to glorify Him, praise Him, and seek His forgiveness and that I have seen him and I forgive him.)”
No matter what a person did in his life he should repent to Allah and Allah will forgive him. Seek the forgiveness of Allah and try to overcome the sins that drag you down. Allah is always there for us and we shouldn’t turn back to anyone but him.
Tafsir surah Al-Nasr.
Al-Bukhari recorded from Ibn Abbas that he said, “Umar used to bring me into the gatherings with the old men of (the battle of) Badr. However, it was as if one of them felt something in himself (against my attending). So he said, `Why do you (`Umar) bring this (youth) to sit with us when we have children like him (i.e., his age)’ So `Umar replied, `Verily, he is among those whom you know. Then one day he called them and invited me to sit with them, and I do not think that he invited me to be among them that day except to show them. So he said, `What do you say about Allah’s statement,
(When there comes the help of Allah and the Conquest.)’ Some of them said, `We were commanded to praise Allah and seek His forgiveness when He helps us and gives us victory.’ Some of them remained silent and did not say anything. Then he (`Umar) said to me, `Is this what you say, O Ibn `Abbas’ I said, `No.’ He then said, `What do you say’ I said, `It was the end of the life of Allah’s Messenger that Allah was informing him of. Allah said,

(When there comes the help of Allah and the Conquest.) which means, that is a sign of the end of your life.
(So, glorify the praises of your Lord, and ask His forgiveness. Verily, He is the One Who accepts the repentance and Who forgives.)’ So, `Umar bin Al-Khattab said, `I do not know anything about it other than what you have said.”’ Al-Bukhari was alone in recording this Hadith. Imam Ahmad recorded from Ibn `Abbas that he said, “When

(Verily, my Lord has informed me that I will see a sign in my Ummah and He has commanded me that when I see it, I should glorify His praises and seek His forgiveness, for He is the One Who accepts repentance. And indeed I have seen it (i.e., the sign). (When there comes the help of Allah and the Conquest (Al-Fath). And you see that the people enter Allah’s religion in crowds. So glorify the praises of your Lord, and ask His forgiveness. Verily, He is the One Who accepts the repentance and Who forgives.))”
