Surah Yusuf benefits and Virtues | Noor Academy
The surah was revealed to the prophet peace and blessing be upon him in Makkah. It is narrated that the prophet said about the benefit of reading Surah Yusuf that: “whoever recites this Surah and teaches his family members how to recite it also, Allah (S.w.T.) will make the final moments before his death (sakaraatul mawt) easy for him to bear and will remove jealousy from his heart.”
What is surah Yusuf about?
We can learn many lessons from Surah Yusuf. It is the only surah in the Quran that are discussing the same story. It tells the story of patience, faith, and Iman. It shows us how Yusuf had faith in Allah no matter what happened to him and how Allah responded to his prayers.
The beginning of the surah narrates how Yusuf’s father Yakub loved him and always protected him, especially from his brother’s jealousy. One day Yusuf had a dream and when he told it to his father interpreted the dream and told him that he will be a prophet just like him. But he told him to keep it a secret from his brothers and others so that they don’t get jealous of him.
Yusuf’s brothers came to their father one day and asked him to let Yusuf go out and play with them at the beginning he refused but then he agreed.
When they went out Yusuf’s brothers faked his death. When they went back to their father and told him about Yusuf’s death, he lost his eyesight. But he never lost his faith in Allah, he had hope that his son Yusuf will return to him one day, and he kept praying to Allah.
Also, from the surah, we learn that Allah’s Plans are Bigger than Human Conspiracies. When Yusuf’s brothers got jealous of him they throw him in a well, just to get him away from their father. But then a group of passengers found him and sold him to the Aziz of Egypt. The Aziz of Egypt raised him like his son.
One day Aziz’s wife and other women seduced him but he rejected and asked Allah to save him and said “قَالَ رَبِّ السِّجْنُ أَحَبُّ إِلَيَّ مِمَّا يَدْعُونَنِي إِلَيْهِ ۖ وَإِلَّا تَصْرِفْ عَنِّي كَيْدَهُنَّ أَصْبُ إِلَيْهِنَّ وَأَكُنْ مِنَ الْجَاهِلِينَ”.
English translation: “O my Lord! the prison is more to my liking than that to which they invite me: Unless Thou turn away their snare from me, I should (in my youthful folly) feel inclined towards them and join the ranks of the ignorant.”
So, he went to prison. However, after many years his innocence was proved. And then he became the Aziz of Egypt.
From surah Yusuf we learn that jealousy destroys the heart:
We saw how Yusuf’s brothers throw him in the well just to get him away from their father out of jealousy. Hatred and jealousy destroy our hearts and changes our personality. It removes the peace that we have and makes us blind. Jealousy makes people unhappy they only look at what others have and forget to see all the blessings that Allah gave them. Not just that jealousy can make people heart each other just like we saw in Surah Yusuf.
Always have faith in Allah:
Allah is always there for us to help him in the time of need and to answer our prayers, whatever happens, we should always trust that Allah will get us out of this situation and that no one else can help us but Allah. We saw how Yusuf trusted Allah and had faith in him and how Allah rewarded him. When he was always in need of help, he knew that no one can help him but Allah.
Patience Against Hardships:
We know that life is a test and that we will always faith challenges some will even be so hard that we think that it is more than we can bear but when that happens, we should remind ourselves that this is a test and Allah will not put us through a test that is more than we can bear. Always have faith in Allah and turn to no one but him.
In Surah Yusuf, we saw how Yusuf and his father Yakub were patient and always had faith in Allah even though the situations they were in were not easy at all.
Kindness and Compassion:
From surah Yusuf, we also learn that we should be kind to others even our enemies or the people who have hurt us before. We saw how Yusuf was so kind to his brothers even after they throw him in the well and separated him from his father out of jealousy. When he met them again in Egypt he didn’t seek revenge or hurt them, instead, he forgave them.
Never Despair of Allah’s Mercy:
We saw how Yakub had faith in Allah and knew that his son Yusuf will return to him and that’s why Allah rewarded him through the reunion with his son Yusuf.
Be a Forgiver:
Surah Yusuf teaches us to forgive the ones who hurt us. We saw how Yusuf forgave his brothers after what they did to him
