What is tashahhud in prayer? | Noor Academy

There are many forms of worship. One of them is praying. While praying we read the Quran and say tashahhud, but what is tashahhud? That’s what we will find out shortly.

The word tashahhud meaning in English is “testimony” and sometimes it is called at-tahiyyat (التحيات) meaning “greetings”. It is recited twice when praying four or three rakat and once when praying two rakats.

You recite it when you sit during the second rakah and then when you sit in the last rakah. We start by saying greetings to Allah then we send peace and blessing upon the prophet Muhammed and on us and all the slaves of Allah.

The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessing be upon him) taught us, “When the Imam recites, then listen attentively, and if he is sitting (in the prayer) then the first remembrance that anyone of you recites should be the Tashahhud.”

That is why we say al tashahhud when we sit in the second and fourth rakat.

Tashahhud is not hard and in this article, we will learn how to say it together. All you have to do is to start reciting al tashahhud slowly and repeat it until you know it by heart.

Let’s get started.

What do you say at Tashahhud?

You say it as follows (tashahhud transliteration): At-tahiyyatu lillahi was-salawatu wat-tayyibat, as-salamu ‘alaika ayyuhan-Nabiyyu wa rahmatAllahi wa baraktuhu.

While tashahhud dua in English is said as follows:

“All the compliments are for Allah and all the prayers and all the good things (are for Allah). Peace is on you, O Prophet, and Allah’s mercy and blessings (are on you). And peace is on us and on the good (pious) worshipers of Allah. I testify that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah and that Muhammad is His slave and Apostle.”

At tashahhud we raise the index finger while we say ‘ashhadu anna Muhammadan abduhu wa rasuluh’.

What do you say first in Tashahhud?

We say tashahhud twice while we pray four and three rakat and we divide it into two in the second rakah we say the first tashahhud, sit and point the index finger in the Qiblah direction and move it while you recite the following:

Tashahhud in English: “All the compliments are for Allah and all the prayers and all the good things (are for Allah). Peace is on you, O Prophet, and Allah’s mercy and blessings (are on you). And peace is on us and on the good (pious) worshipers of Allah. I testify that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah and that Muhammad is His slave and Apostle.”

Is Tashahhud obligatory?

Tashahhud is wajib not obligatory; not reciting it won’t invalidate your prayer, however, it is better to recite so that your prayer won’t be deficient.

All you have to do is to right the tashahhud in a paper and try to memorize it, read from the paper while you pray until you manage to recite it on your own.

With time you will know it by heart and you will be proud of yourself.

How do you sit Tashahhud?

The Sunnah tells us to sit on the left foot while standing the right foot up as the toes are pointing towards the Qibla.

It was narrated that the Prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) used to sit as follows: “[horizontally] lay his left foot down, and [vertically] stand his right foot…” [Muslim]

Some scholars say that you should point the toes of the left foot too towards the Qibla, but that’s only if you can do so as this is really difficult to do. There is no problem if you can’t do so, just sit in the normal position.

Regarding the hand, hold the right hand closed with the index finger pointing at the Qibla direction and move it while reciting the tashahhud.

How to say tashahhud in Arabic?

You read it as follows:

atthayyato lillahe wassalawato wattayyibatu. Assalamu ‘alayka ayyuhan-Nabiyyi warahmatullahi wabarakatuh.

How to say tashahhud in salat? How do you say Attahiyat?

You don’t just say the Tashahhud while praying, you could also say it to remember Allah and the prophet as azkar.

While praying you say Tashahhud in the second and fourth rakat after doing sujood.

In the second rakah say:

Read as follows:

Atthayyato lillahe wassalawato wattayyibatu. Assalamu ‘alayka ayyuhan-Nabiyyi warahmatullahi wabarakatuh. Assalaamu ‘alyna wa ‘ala ‘ibaadillaahis saaliheen. Ash-hadu an laa ilaaha illallaah wa ash-hadu anna Muhammadan ‘abduhu wa rasuluh.

While in the fourth rakah or last rakah you say the full tashahhud:

You read it as follows:

Atthayyato lillahe wassalawato wattayyibatu. Assalamu ‘alayka ayyuhan-Nabiyyi warahmatullahi wabarakatuh.

Tashahhud in English: “All the compliments are for Allah and all the prayers and all the good things (are for Allah). Peace is on you, O Prophet, and Allah’s mercy and blessings (are on you). And peace is on us and on the good (pious) worshipers of Allah. I testify that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah and that Muhammad is His slave and Apostle.

O, Allah! Praise Muhammad, and on the family of Muhammad, as You Praised Ibraaheem, and the family of Ibraaheem; you are indeed Worthy of Praise, Full of Glory. And send blessings on Muhammad, and on the family of Muhammad, as you sent blessings on Ibraaheem, and the family of Ibraaheem; you are indeed Worthy of Praise, Full of Glory.”

What is tashahhud and tasleem?

Tasleem is what we say when we finish praying you to look at the right and say Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullah (“Peace and blessings of Allah (God) be unto you”), then you look at the left and say Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullah (“Peace and blessings of Allah (God) be unto you”).

While tashahhud is what we say when sitting in the second and fourth rakah.

What to say during tashahhud? What should I read in Attahiyat?

tashahhud in arabic
tashahhud in Arabic

You will say the following in the second rakah:

“All the compliments are for Allah and all the prayers and all the good things (are for Allah). Peace is on you, O Prophet, and Allah’s mercy and blessings (are on you). And peace is on us and on the good (pious) worshipers of Allah. I testify that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah and that Muhammad is His slave and Apostle.

O, Allah! Praise Muhammad, and on the family of Muhammad, as You Praised Ibraaheem and the family of Ibraaheem; you are indeed Worthy of Praise, Full of Glory. And send blessings on Muhammad, and on the family of Muhammad, as you sent blessings on Ibraaheem, and the family of Ibraaheem; you are indeed Worthy of Praise, Full of Glory.”
