Difference between alhamdulillah and subhanallah

Meanings of Subhanallah

The word Subhan means being in something. So think of the word ‘Subhanallah’ as a metaphor that portrays Allah as a vast ocean and utter dependence upon him for all support.

Also, Subhanallah means “May Allah be raised” or “May Allah is free of any deficiency.”

Allah said in the Holy Quran:

“Or have they a deity other than Allah? Subhanallah [exalted is Allah above] whatever they associate with Him.” (Surah Al-Isra 17:43)

We say Subhanallah to express our amazement of the wonders that Allah created, for example when you look at the beauty of the sunrise the only word that will come to your mind is ‘Subhanallah’.

Also ‘Subhanallah’ is part of what is called Tasbih. After each prayer, Muslims say ‘Subhanallah (God is perfect), Alhamdulillah (All praise is due to Allah), and Allahu Akbar (Allah is greatest). Each one of them is said 33 times.

Importance and uses of Alhamdulillah

al ham du lillah can be used in many ways but the reason behind them all is to thank Allah for what we have.

For example, when something good happens to a person he would normally say “Thank God.”, Muslims say Alhamdulillah instead. Like saying, “Alhamdulillah, I have passed my exams”. Or “Alhamdulillah! I got an A in chemistry!”

Also, it is said to thank god for anything, like thanking Allah for the gift of being able to see, walk, hear, or anything else. Those are all gifts from Allah that worth thanking him for.

It can also be used in prayers. ‘allahumdullah’ is part of what is called Tasbih. After each prayer, Muslims say ‘Subhanallah (God is perfect), Alhamdulillah (All praise is due to Allah), and Allahu Akbar (Allah is greatest). Each one of them is said 33 times.

We don’t just say it when something good happens but also when bad things occur or when we face difficulties as a sign of accepting Allah’s will.

Simply we say it in any situation or at any time to show our gratitude to Allah and thank him for all the wonders that we have. So, Alhamdulillah for everything that we have in our lives.

Alhamdulillah in Arabic

Alhamdulillah is written in Arabic as follows:

الحمد لله

Some people say Hamdullah or hamdulilah which is the same thing as saying Alhamdulillah. As we said the English meaning of this word can be “All praise is due to Allah”, “All praise is due to God alone”, “All the praises and thanks be to Allah”, or “Praise be to Allah.”

Muslims recite this word all the time because both the Quran and Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessing be upon him) teach us to say it daily and frequently.

Alhamdulillah in English

Alhamdulillah has more than one translation, but they are all similar, here they are:

“All praise is due to Allah.”

“praise is due to God alone.”

“the praises and thanks be to Allah.”

“Praise be to Allah.”

Hadith on Importance of Remembering Allah

Here is a hadith alhamdillah

Abu Malik Al-Ash’ari (may Allah be pleased with him) reported:

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “Purity is half of iman (faith). ‘Al-hamdu lillah (all praise and gratitude belong to Allah)’ fills the scales, and ‘subhan-Allah (how far is Allah from every imperfection) and ‘Al-hamdulillah (all praise and gratitude belong to Allah)’ fill that which is between heaven and earth.”

Another Hadith about Saying alhamdulillah when someone sneezes:

Abu Salih reported that the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, “When one of you sneezes, he should say, ‘Praise be to Allah.’ When he says, ‘Praise be to Allah, ‘ his brother or companion should say to him [Yarhamuk-Allah], ‘May Allah have mercy on you.’ Then let the person who sneezed say [Yahdikum-ullah wa yuslihu balakum], ‘May Allah guide you and put your affairs in order.’”

You should always thank Allah and say alhamdillah for everything that you have got, we have many things to thank Allah for more than we can count.

You could simply thank God and say ‘say allahumdullah for everything’, ‘alhamdulillah rabb al alamin’, or just say ‘alhamdullah’.

Alhamdulillah for everything in Arabic is written as ‘الحمد لله على كل شئ’.

Now we know that  ‘Alhamdulillah’ is part of what is called Tasbih. After each prayer, Muslims say ‘Subhanallah (God is perfect), Alhamdulillah (All praise is due to Allah), and Allahu Akbar (Allah is greatest). Each one of them is said 33 times.
