قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ ٱلنَّاسِ١

Say, ˹O Prophet,˺ “I seek refuge in the Lord of humankind,

مَلِكِ ٱلنَّاسِ ٢

the Master of humankind,

إِلَـٰهِ ٱلنَّاسِ ٣

the God of humankind,

مِن شَرِّ ٱلْوَسْوَاسِ ٱلْخَنَّاسِ ٤

from the evil of the lurking whisperer

ٱلَّذِى يُوَسْوِسُ فِى صُدُورِ ٱلنَّاسِ ٥

who whispers into the hearts of humankind

مِنَ ٱلْجِنَّةِ وَٱلنَّاسِ ٦

from among jinn and humankind.”

Explanation of verses of surah nas

Verse 1:

In this verse, Allah shows us that he is the Lord of humankind and that we need his protection and refuge against all the evil and hardships that we go through.

Verses 2 and 3

This verse shows that Allah is the king of the world and that No one is mightier and bigger than Allah.

Verses 4 and 5

This verse shows us that Allah wants to protect us from the whispers of the Shaitan and evil thoughts. The Arabic word ‘khannas’ comes from ‘Khanasa’ which means ‘to sneak, subside or pull out subtly.’

Verse 6

The word ‘Waswas’ shows us that the demons from among humanity and the Jinn murmur into the hearts of humankind. So, Allah is saying to the Prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) to seek refuge from not just demons and Jinn but also from humans.

Surah Falaq and Surah Al Naas are known as the Al-Mu’awwidhatain or ‘the verses of refuge’. They protect us against evil things when reciting them.

Surah Falaq protects us against:

  •   Evil creatures (people, animals, jinn, etc.)
  •   Any sort of magic
  •   Enviers

While surah Nas protects us from humans and jinn, it protects us from going on the wrong path that humans and jinn are leading us to.

You should read surah Ikhlas and Ma’awwidhatain after the daily prayer, before sleeping, and when waking up so that Allah protects you from any harm. The prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) said:

‘Abdullah bin Khubaib reported: The Messenger of Allah (pbuh) said to me, “Recite Surat Al-Ikhlas and Al- Mu’awwidhatain (Surat Al-Falaq and Surat An-Nas) three times at dawn and dusk. It will suffice you in all respects.”

Hazrat Aisha described: Whenever the Prophet SAW hit the sack each night, he used to cup his hands together and blow over it after recounting Surat Al-Ikhlas, Surat Al-Falaq, and surah nas, and afterward rub his hands over his body, he had the option to sharpen, beginning with his head, face, and front of his body. He used to do that multiple times. (Sahih Al-Bukhari, 5016).

Abu Sa’id Al-Khudri reported that the prophet Muhammad (peace and blessing be upon him) used to look for insurance against jinn’s evil and the hostile stares till Surat Al-Falaq and Surat An-Nas were uncovered. After they were uncovered, he took to them to look for Allah’s security and left everything other than them.
