Why Sadaqah is used instead of Zakah surah tawbah?

There are many lessons to learn from surah Tawbah( Arabic: سورة التوبة ), that’s why we will learn everything about it starting from its name, all the way to its tafsir.

First, let’s understand the difference between sadaqah and zakah. Zakat is one of the five pillars of Islam that is obligatory to every Muslim. It’s an annual payment with a fixed amount of 2.5% of the person’s wealth and is given to specific people. While Sadaqah doesn’t have any limitations or fixed amounts you can give as much as you want to anyone.

Also, Zakah is only performed by the person while he is still alive no one can give Zakah on behave of a person who is no longer alive. On the other hand, you can do Sadaqah and Sadaqah Jariyah for your loved ones who no longer exist in this life.

SURAH AT-TAUBAH AYAT 60:

Innamas sadaqaatu lilfuqaraaa’i walmasaakeeni wal ‘aamileena ‘alaihaa wal mu’al lafati quloobuhum wa fir riqaabi walghaarimeena wa fee sabeelil laahi wabnis sabeeli fareedatam minal laah; wal laahu ‘Aleemun Hakeem

“Sadaqah expenditures are only for the poor and for the needy and for those employed to collect [zakah] and for bringing hearts together [for Islam] and for freeing captives [or slaves] and for those in debt and for the cause of Allah and for the [stranded] traveler – an obligation [imposed] by Allah. And Allah is Knowing and Wise.”

Why Sadaqah is used instead of Zakah surah al Tawbah? In surah at Tawbah, the word Sadaqah came in the meaning of Zakah just to clarify who are the people you should give charity for. So, from this verse, we understand that Zakah is given only to specific people and they are the needy, for freeing captives, for those employed to collect and for bringing hearts together and for those in debt, and for the cause of Allah and for the traveler.

At tawbah meaning?

The meaning of the word At-Tawbah in English is repentance. It is the surah number nine in the holy Quran with 129 verses. The surah was revealed in the Madina. Surah Tawba is also called Bara’at, which means repudiation. Because the first verse starts by discussing the repudiation of the Prophet towards the unbelievers

Surah Tawbah meaning.

The main theme of the al Tawbah surah is the Hypocrites, the people who chose their lives over fighting for Allah. Allah tells the Prophet not to pray on the Hypocrites when they die and what will happen to them in the afterlife.

Why was surah Tawbah revealed?

Surah al Tawbah was revealed to show the Hypocrites that Allah knows what they did and that he will never forgive them even if the Prophet prayed for them. To show them that there is nothing they can do to erase what they did.

Sa`id bin Jubair Narrated:

I asked Ibn `Abbas about Surat Al-Tauba, and he said, “Surat Al-Tauba? It is exposure (of all the evils of the infidels and the hypocrites). And it continued revealing (that the oft-repeated expression): ‘…and of them …and of them.’ till they started thinking that none would be left unmentioned therein.”

What is surah Tawbah about?

Surah At-Tawbah is about the Hypocrites and how Allah exposed what they did. The Surah mentions the three men who chose to stay in the back even though they were capable of going. Unlike the poor people who wanted to go fight for Allah and when the Prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) told them that they can’t go they felt so much sorrow and sadness.

Where was surah Tawbah revealed?

Surah Tawbah was revealed in Madina.

When was surah Tawbah revealed?

Tawbah surah wasn’t revealed all at the same time. The first part from verses 1 to 37 was revealed in Zil-Qadah A.H. 9.

The second part from verses 38 to 72 was revealed in Rajab A.H. 9. While the last part was revealed when the Prophet returned from the Campaign of Tabuk

Why the surah was named At-Tawbah?

The Surah is called Tawbah because it talks about repentance and its conditions.

What is the main theme of surah at Tawbah?

The surah discusses three topics the hajj, the hypocrites, and the warning of the hypocrites of their evil deeds.  about the Hypocrites and how Allah exposed what they did. The Surah mentions the three men who chose to stay in the back even though they were capable of going. Unlike the poor people who wanted to go fight for Allah and when the Prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) told them that they can’t go they felt so much sorrow and sadness.

What are the lessons learned from Surah Al-Tawbah?

Here are some of the main lessons we learn from al-Tawbah surah.

1-     The hypocrite:

The first thing you will think off when you hear this word is that they are bad people, but do you know what are their main characteristics?

“Were it an accessible gain or a short journey, they would have surely followed you; but the distance seemed too far to them. Yet they will swear by Allah: ‘If we could, we would have surely gone forth with you.’ They [merely] destroy themselves. Allah knows that they are indeed liars.”

From Surah al Tawbah we learn that they do the following:

  •       They like to stay in their comfort zone
  •       They accompany religion when there is an accessible gain
  •       They lie

They are not willing to wage jihad with their possessions and their persons (9:44).

They do not believe in Allah and the Last Day, and their hearts are in doubt (9:45).

They do not get the towfiq to go to Jihad (9:46).

They spread rumors, cause sedition, and spy (9:47).

The victory of the Muslims upsets them (9:50).

They feel intimidated and stressed and do not feel secure (9:56-57).

They are not content with what is given to them and slander even the prophet (S) (9:58).

2-     The acceptance of Sadaqah by Allah.

Allah doesn’t accept Sadaqah or Zakah from the bad people who don’t believe in Allah and his Prophet and pray just as a show-off and they give money to the poor but deep down they don’t want to do so.

“Nothing stops their charities from being accepted except that they have no faith in Allah and His Apostle and do not perform the prayer but lazily, and do not spend but reluctantly.”

3-     Wealth and children.

Wealth and children are only a test to the true believers, so don’t be impressed by the hypocrite’s wealth and children because it’s a way of punishment.

This is mentioned in Surah al-Tawbah in the verse number 55:

“So let not their wealth and children impress you: Allah only desires to punish them with these in the life of this world, and that their souls may depart while they are faithless.”

4-     Overcome the life challenges:

“[It would have been better] if they had been pleased with what Allah and His Apostle gave them, and had said, ‘Allah is sufficient for us; Allah and His Apostle will give to us out of His grace. Indeed, to Allah do we eagerly turn.’ “

Always thank Allah for what you have and ask him for his mercy and forgiveness, don’t look to what other people have. We only want to come closer to Allah, do good deeds, and stay away from committing sins. That’s what the hypocrites failed to do, when the prophet was distributing the Zakah and giving it to the needy the hypocrites objected and said that they did not receive anything. That’s why this verse was revealed.

5-     The people who deserve the Zakah and Sadaqah.

One of the main pillars of Islam is Zakah, and in the surah, Tawbah Allah shows us who we should give the Zakah, and they are:

  •       The poor (One who is needy yet does not request others)
  •       The needy (in a worse state of poverty and one who requests from others)
  •       Those employed to collect them,
  •       Those whose hearts are to be reconciled,
  •       For [the freedom of] the slaves and
  •       For the debtors,
  •       In the way of Allah (those who preach Islam),
  •       For the traveler.

Is surah al tawbah makki or madani?

Surah al tawbah is a madani surah.

In which para is surah at Tawbah?

Surah al Tawbah starts in the Para (Juz) number 10 and ends in the Juz 11.

Hadith on surah at Tawbah

Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessing be upon him) said: “On Qiyamah, I will intercede for the one who recites surahs Anfal and Tawbah and shall witness that he is not a hypocrite. Moreover, he will have the reward of ten good deeds, ten sins will be wiped off his record of deeds. He will be elevated ten ranks, equal to the number of hypocritical men and women in the world. God’s throne and its bearers shall send salutations to him throughout his life in the world.”

Surah Tawbah benefits.

We learn a lot from Surah al-Tawbah and now we will see what is the benefits of reading it.

  1.    The sincerity of faith in this world and intercession of the Prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) in the next world

  1.   be one of the true followers of the Prophet (peace and blessing be upon him).

Abi Abdillah said: “He who recites surahs Anfal and Bara’at every month, will be blessed with heavenly bounties along with true followers of the Prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) on the Day of Reckoning until people are finished accounting for their deeds.”

  1.   Be safe from theft and fire.

The prophet said that the person who carries surah al Tawbah with him will be safe from theft and his house will be safe from burning.

  1.   Safety from wild animals.

T is narrated that the prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) said that if a person fears wild animals then he should read verses 128-129 of surah Tawbah to protect him.

  1.   reading verse 129 of surah Tawbah 70 times every day to be protected.

“But if they turn their backs [on you], say, ‘Allah is sufficient for me. There is no god except Him. In Him, I have put my trust and He is the Lord of the Great Throne.”

Surah tawbah Tafseer

Here are some of the verses and their English translation:

“Those who were allowed to stay behind rejoiced at remaining behind and not accompanying the Messenger of Allah. They were averse to striving in the Way of Allah with their belongings and their lives and told others: “Do not go forth in this fierce heat.” Tell them: “The Hell is far fiercer in heat.” Would that they understand!”

“Let them, then, laugh little, and weep much at the contemplation of the punishment for the evil they have committed.”

“Then if Allah brings you face to face with a party of them, and they ask your leave to go forth (to fight in the Way of Allah), tell them: “You shall not go forth with me, and shall never fight against any enemy along with me. You were well-pleased to remain at home the first time, so now continue to remain with those who have stayed behind.”

“Do not ever pray over any of them who dies, nor stand over his grave. They disbelieved in Allah and His Messenger and died in iniquity.”

This verse was revealed to the prophet to prevent him from praying on the hypocrites when they die.

“Let not their riches or their children excite your admiration. Through these Allah seeks to chastise them in this world, and that their lives will depart them while they are unbelievers.”

“And whenever any surah is revealed enjoining: “Believe in Allah and strive (in His Way) along with His Messenger,” the affluent among them ask you to excuse them, saying: “Leave us with those who will sit back at home.”

“They were content to stay behind with the womenfolk. Their hearts were sealed, leaving them bereft of understanding.”

“But the Messenger and those who shared his faith strove with their belongings and their lives. It is they who shall have all kinds of good. It is they who shall prosper.”

“Allah has prepared for them Gardens beneath which rivers flow. There shall they abide. That is the supreme triumph.”

Surah Tawbah summary

The first part of Surah Tawbah was revealed to discuss Hajj. The prophet sent Ali to go after Abu Bakr who has already left Makkah as the leader of the Pilgrims to the Kabah to deliver him the discourse that he will make to inform the different clans of Arabia about the new policy towards the mushriks.

The second part was revealed when the prophet was preparing for the Campaign of Tabuk. Allah instructed all the believers to take a part in the jihad. And to show that the hypocrites chose to stay in the back and chose not to sacrifice their life or wealth for Allah.

The third part was revealed when the Prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) was on his way back from the Campaign of Tabuk. It was revealed to warn the hypocrites about what they did and tell them that Allah will not forgive them for choosing their lives and wealth over jihad.
