How many prophets are mentioned in surah Anbiya? The total number of prophets mentioned in Surah al anbiya is 15, and they are, Idris, Nuh, Lut, Ibrahim, Ismail, Ishaq, Yaqub, Ayyub, Dhulkifl, Musa, Harun, Dawud, Sulayman, Zakariya, Yahya.

Now let’s learn more about the surah and its main message.

Why was surah anbiya revealed?

Anbiya surah was revealed to show the humans that all the prophets are humans, and none of them was an angel. They were ordinary people, immortals just like anyone else.

“And We did not make the prophets forms not eating food, nor were they immortal [on earth].” [21:8]

And to tell us that the revelation sent to every prophet has the same message that there is no God but Allah

“And We sent not before you any messenger except that We revealed to him that, “There is no deity except Me, so worship Me.” [21:25]

Allah sent the prophet to lead the people and guide them to the right path.

“And We made them leaders guiding by Our command. And We inspired to them the doing of good deeds, the establishment of prayer, and giving of zakah; and they were worshippers of Us.” [21:73]

Another theme of the surah is that the prophets were always doing what bring them closer to Allah.

“….And We inspired to them the doing of good deeds…” [21:73]

“…Indeed, they used to hasten to good deeds…” [21:90]

Allah made all the Prophets good people who are eager to do good deeds, pray and do charity. They pray to come closer to Allah.

“… the establishment of prayer, and giving of zakah;..” [21:73]

“….and all [of them] We made righteous.” [21:73]

“…supplicate Us in hope and fear…” [21:90]

 What is surah Anbiya about?

Surah Anbiya is about the conflict that happened between the prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) and the chiefs of Makkah when the Quran was revealed to him. The surah discusses the doubts and objections that people held against the prophet eliminating all of them and proofing that he is the prophet.

The surah warns the people who hurt the prophet that they will be judged in the afterlife for everything they have done and for not believing in Allah.

Where was surah anbiya revealed?

Surah Al-Anbiya was revealed in Makkah.

When was surah anbiya revealed?

surah anbiya was revealed in Mecca around 618 – 621 AD. It is the surah number 21 with total verses of 112.

Why the surah was named Al-Anbiya?

The Surah was named al-Anbiya (prophets) because it contains many names of the prophets.

What is the main theme of surah al Anbiya?

In verses 1 to 47 the surah discusses the following:

The matter of how all the prophets are ordinary humans because people kept saying that a prophet should be an angel sent to earth to guide them and refused to believe in the prophet Muhammad (peace and blessing be upon him).

They started to raise doubts against the prophet and the revelation, thinking that life is all about pleasures and desires and that they will not be punished for their actions. Therefore, Surah Anbiya shows them that the purpose of life is to do all kinds of good deeds and to come closer to Allah not to follow their desires and the distractions of life.

The main reason for their disbelieving in the prophet is that they don’t want to believe that there is only one Allah and that what they are doing is wrong.

They said that the prophet was lying about the revelation and the punishment of God for the ones who disbelieve in him. Saying that if what the prophet said is true why didn’t anything happen to them yet even though they kept questioning him and rejecting him. They believed that all the promises and punishment the prophet told them about are not real.

From verses 48 to 91. Those verses talk about the lives of the prophets showing that they were all normal humans, and none of them was an angel. They were praying and worshiping Allah all the time just like we should do.

Surah Al-Anbiya shows the prophet that just like the people kept rejecting him and objecting to the revelation, the same thing happened with all the prophets.

From verses 92 to 106, Allah tells the believers that walking on the right way, following the prophet, and believing in him is what will save them from the afterlife judgment, and that those who keep disbelieving in the prophet will be punished.

From verses 107 to 112, Allah shows us that the prophets are sent to guide us to the right path. The prophets were sent to tell the people about the right way of life, why we were created and what will happen in the afterlife. Telling us that there is no god but Allah.

Surah Anbiya benefits

There are many lessons we learn from Surah Al-Anbiya and here are some of them:

All the prophets were ordinary humans, and we should focus on Allah’s message and follow his orders instead of questioning why didn’t Allah send angels to be humans.

There are an afterlife and judgment and that’s what we should think of instead of being distracted by life’s pleasures.

There can’t be more than one god or the heavens and earth will be in a total mess.

Allah created the world and the skies, before that the sky and earth were only one mass until Allah created the world.

No human was granted immortality.

Allah is the one who created us and all the living beings.

Allah revealed Al-Furqan to the prophet Musa just like the Quran was revealed to the prophet Muhammad.

Prophet Ibrahim destroyed the idols that his people were worshiping to show them that they aren’t real and that they couldn’t even defend themselves. Then how did the idols create humans and the world as they claim?

The believers will be protected from the hellfire by their faith in Allah and the good deeds they do.

Benefits of reading Anbiya Surah

The prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) said: “Whoever recites Surah Al-’Anbiya’ Allah will take his reckoning easy, (and also On the Day of Hereafter He will not reckon his deeds strictly), and every prophet whose name has been mentioned in the Qur’an will greet him and shake his hands.”

Imam Ja’far as-Sadiq said that whoever recites surah al-Ambiya frequently, his status in Jannah will be close to the Prophets.

Reciting the surah will remove all your worries and stress. Also reciting Surah al Anbiya will make the reader have good dreams that will make him happy.
