What does astaghfirullah mean? | Noor Academy

one important Dua is saying “astaghfirullah”, but why is that? And, what does it mean? That’s what we will find out shortly.

Astaghfirullah in Arabic.

Astagfurillah is written in Arabic as follows:

أَسْتَغْفِرُ اللّٰهَ‎ (ʾastaḡfiru llāha), Which means “I ask forgiveness from Allah”).

When to say astaghfirullah?

You can say astafallah at any time, when you feel down, anxiety, tired, frustrated, there are many reasons to say it and you can even say it with no reason just to ask Allah for his forgiveness and mercy. Try your best to say “astagfirollah” at least 100 times everyday, make it a habit and see how you will feel better.

How to say astaghfirullah?

There are many ways to say astagfurallah, and here are some of the supplications that you can say to ask Allah for his forgiveness:

1-     astaghfirullah al azeem

2-     astaghfirullah

3-     you could say syed astaghfiru:

اَلّلهُمَّ أنْتَ رَبِّيْ لَا اِلهَ اِلَّا أَنْتَ خَلَقْتَنِيْ وَأَنَا عَبْدُكَ وَأَنَا عَلى عَهْدِكَ وَوَعْدِكَ مَا اسْتَطَعْتُ أَعُوْذُ بِكَ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا صَنَعْتُ اَبُوءُ لَكَ بِنِعْمَتِكَ عَلَيَّ وَأَبُوءُ بِذَنْبِيْ فَاغْفِرْ لِيْ ذُنُوْبِىْ فَإِنَّه لَا يَغْفِرُ الذُّنُوْبَ إلَّا أَنْتَ

“O Allah, you are my Lord. There is no god but You. You created me. And I am your servant. And I stand by your covenant and promise. I seek refuge in You, according to my power, from my iniquities. And I confess your blessings and confess my sins. So forgive me my sins. Verily, no one forgives sins except You.”

4-      

‏رب اغفر لي، وتب على إنك أنت التواب الرحيم”‏”

My Rab! Forgive me and pardon me. Indeed, You are the Oft-Returning with compassion and Ever Merciful.” (Riyadu-s Saliheen)

5-      

   أستغفر الله الذي لا إله إلا هو الحي القيوم وأتوب إليه

I seek the forgiveness of Allah, there is no true god except Allah, the Ever-Living, the Self- Subsisting, and I turn to Him in repentance

6-      

“‏سبحان الله وبحمده، أستغفر الله، وأتوب إليه‏”

(Allah is free from imperfection, and I begin with praising Him. I beg forgiveness from Allah and I turn to Him in repentance

 

Why do we say astaghfirullah?

We say astaghfirullah to ask Allah for his forgiveness and to repent for every bad thing that we have done in our lives.

Astaghfirullah benefits.

There are many benefits of saying Astaghfirullah and here we will mention some of them:

1-     It gives us the feeling of relief and peace of mind. So, whenever you feel stressed or anxiety recite it and you will be relieved.

2-     Istighfar makes us feel happy and removes our anxiety.

3-     Your dua and wishes will be answered.

4-     Allah will forgive you.

5-     It opens the door of sustenance.

6-     It removes all the sadness and distress you go through.

7-     Help you calm down.

8-     Help you get out of the depression you are in.

9-     Saying Astaghfirullah regularly Keeps you away from committing sins.

10-  Ibn Abbas narrated that the prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) said: “If anyone constantly seeks pardon (from Allah), Allah will appoint for him a way out of every distress and a relief from every anxiety, and will provide sustenance for him from where he expects not.”

11-  The prophet also said: “The one who (regularly) says Istighfaar, that is, frequently repent to Allah Ta’aala for sins committed, Allah Azza Wa-Jal will open a path from poverty and difficulties. All sorrow and hardship will be removed, and in its place prosperity and contentment granted. One will receive sustenance from unimagined and unexpected sources.”

12-  There is another hadith about Istighfar, were the prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) said: “The one who seeks forgiveness for Muslim males and females from Allah Ta’aala twenty six or twenty five times every day, Allah Ta’ala will count that person among those whose Du’a is accepted, and through the barakah of whom those on earth gain Rizq (sustenance).”

13-  It is a sunnah to say Astaghfirullah at least 100 times everyday.

14-  Saying Sayyidul Istighfar one time will grant us Allah forgiveness, you could even say it once after each payer. Here is Sayyidul Istighfar Dua, try to memorize it and recite it daily:

اَلّلهُمَّ أنْتَ رَبِّيْ لَا اِلهَ اِلَّا أَنْتَ خَلَقْتَنِيْ وَأَنَا عَبْدُكَ وَأَنَا عَلى عَهْدِكَ وَوَعْدِكَ مَا اسْتَطَعْتُ أَعُوْذُ بِكَ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا صَنَعْتُ اَبُوءُ لَكَ بِنِعْمَتِكَ عَلَيَّ وَأَبُوءُ بِذَنْبِيْ فَاغْفِرْ لِيْ ذُنُوْبِىْ فَإِنَّه لَا يَغْفِرُ الذُّنُوْبَ إلَّا أَنْتَ

 

“O Allah, you are my Lord. There is no god but You. You created me. And I am your servant. And I stand by your covenant and promise. I seek refuge in You, according to my power, from my iniquities. Astaghfirullah Dua in Quran.

In the Quran we will see that Allah instructed us to repent and ask for his mercy and forgiveness, here are some of the verses were Istighfar is mentioned:

وَاسْتَغْفِرُواْ اللَّهَ إِنَّ اللَّهَ غَفُورٌ رَّحِيمٌ “

Seek forgiveness with God! Certainly, God is Ever-Forgiving [and] Merciful.” (Quran: 73:20)

 

 

وَما كانَ اللَّهُ مُعَذِّبَهُمْ وَهُمْ يَسْتَغْفِرُونَ

“God will not punish them while they seek [God’s] forgiveness.” (Quran: 8:33)

 

 

وا اسْتَغْفِرُوا رَبَّكُمْ إِنَّهُ كَانَ غَفَّارًا  يُرْسِلِ السَّمَاء عَلَيْكُم مِّدْرَارًا  وَيُمْدِدْكُمْ بِأَمْوَالٍ وَبَنِينَ وَيَجْعَللَّكُمْ جَنَّاتٍ وَيَجْعَل لَّكُمْ أَنْهَارًا “

 

“Ask forgiveness from your Lord; Verily, He is Ever-Forgiving. He will send rain to you in abundance, increase you in wealth, children, orchards, and rivers.” (Quran: 71:10-12).

 

 

“But not is (for) Allah that He punishes them while you (are) among them, and not is Allah the One Who punishes them while they seek forgiveness.” (Quran, 8:33)

 

“And whoever does a wrong or wrongs himself but then seeks forgiveness of Allah will find Allah Forgiving and Merciful.” (Surah An-Nisa 4:110)

 

Abu Huraira narrated that the Prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) said: “Allah pleased! More than 70 times a day, I ask Allah for forgiveness and turn to Him in repentance.”

 

 

Allah also said in the Holy Quran:

“Seek the forgiveness of your Lord, and turn to Him in repentance, that He may grant you good enjoyment, for a term appointed, and bestow His abounding Grace to every owner of grace (i.e. the one who helps and serves needy and deserving, physically and with his wealth, and even with good words). But if you turn away, then I fear for you the torment of a Great Day (i.e. the Day of Resurrection).” (Hud 11:3)

 

“Declare (O Muhammad SAWS) unto My slaves, that truly, I am the Oft-Forgiving, the Most-Merciful.” (Al-Hijr 15:49)

 

“Then, verily! Your Lord for those who do evil (commit sins and are disobedient to Allâh) in ignorance and afterward repent and do righteous deeds, verily, your Lord thereafter, (to such) is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.” (An-Nahl 16:119)

 

“Your Lord knows best what is in your inner-selves. If you are righteous, then, verily, He is Ever Most Forgiving to those who turn unto Him again and again in obedience, and in repentance.” (Al-Isra 17:25)

 

“And verily, I am indeed Forgiving to him who repents, believes (in My Oneness, and associates none in worship with Me) and does righteous good deeds, and then remains constant in doing them, (till his death).” (Ta-Ha 20:82)

 

“And say (O Muhammad SAW): “My Lord! Forgive and have mercy, for You are the Best of those who show mercy!” (Al-Mumenoon 23:118)

How many times should you say astaghfirullah after prayer?

Can I say Astaghfirullah without wudu?

Yes, you don’t have to make wudu to say Astaghfrulla, it’s a supplication that you can say at any time.

What is the difference between Istighfar and astaghfirullah?

Istighfar refers to asking Alla for his forgiveness through saying astaghfirullah, there are many supplications that you can say and we mentioned some of them above.
