The surah carries a lot of topics and meanings to us all, and here they are:

  • surah e hood shows us that the Quran is revealed to us from Allah, and no one but Allah knows everything about the world and creatures.

  • At the end of the surah, Allah orders us to rely on him in everything.

Why was surah hud revealed?

surah hud was revealed during the last year in Mecca before the migration to Madina. During that time the Muslims were going through a lot and the prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) was experiencing a hard time to do the death of his wife Khadijah and his uncle Abu-Talib. So this Surah offers consolation to the prophet.

The Prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) once said: “Surah Hud made me age”, for the following verse:

“Persevere and persist as you have been ordered and your followers with you.”

Where was surah hud revealed?

Surah al hood was revealed in Makkah, it is the surah number 52 in order of revelation, and number 11 in the Quran, with no of verses of 123.

When was surah hud revealed?

According to the topics discussed in hud surah, scholars concluded that it must be revealed between the periods 615 to 619 AD in Mecca.

What are the topics discussed in the surah? The story of the prophet Nuh, the story of the prophet Hud and his people Aad. A challenge to the unbelievers is to come up with ten surahs like the Quran, the angels who came to prophet Ibrahim to tell him about the punishment of the people of the prophet Lut.

Why the surah was named hud?

The reason it is called Hud is that it relates to the story of Prophet Hud. The prophet hud was mentioned five times in this Surah, one of them is in verse number 50.

“And to ‘Aad [We sent] their brother Hud. He said, “O my people, worship Allah; you have no deity other than Him. You are not but inventors [of falsehood].”

However, the prophet hud story is not the only topic discussed in the Surah, there are many other topics and prophets’ stories. It is just a name to represent the Surah.

What is the main theme of surah al hud?

Surah hud Quran doesn’t only mention the story of the prophet hud and his people, it also carries a lot of lessons. It tells the believers about their reward and heaven, and warns the disbelievers of their punishment, if they keep committing sins and not believing in Allah and his prophets, with examples from what happened in the past to the unbelievers.

Surat hud shows us all that there is no God but Allah, and also about the day of judgment and resurrection. The Surah told us about the stories of the prophets Noah, Hud, Saleh, Ibrahim, Lot, Shuayb, and Moses.

The surah states the fact that Islam is revealed by Allah to all the prophets starting from the prophet Adam to the prophet Muhammed. That’s why the surah mentioned many stories.

Surah Hud starts by talking about the unbelievers of Mecca and how they kept denying that the prophet Muhammed is a prophet sent from Allah. Then it talks about the stories of the prophets and how they suffered with their people.

It started with the story of the prophet Noah and how his son refused to believe in him:

“And it carries them through the waves which were like the mountains and Noah calls out to his son, who remained aloof, “O my son! Get on [the ship] with us and do not stay with the disbelievers.”

“He replied, “I will stand on the mountain to give me shelter from the water”. He said, “Nothing will be saved today unless those on whom He shows mercy”. And [suddenly] the waves came in between them, so he was of the drowned.”

Then the story of the prophet Hood and his people who refused to believe in him and he told them:

“[You can ask everyone] except Him [for help to] plot against me, all together then do not give me a respite.”

The story of the prophet Hud is then followed by the story of the prophet Salih, when they asked them to believe in Allah they said:

“They said, “O Ṣāliḥ! We had considerable hope in you before this [event]. Do you prevent us from worshiping [the idols] which our fathers used to worship? Indeed, we have serious doubt concerning that to which you invite us.”

The prophet Salih showed them his miracle and warned them from harming it:

“And O my people! This is the camel of God. It is for you, so allow it to graze [freely] in the field, and do not harm it; [if you do so] God will punish you with a quick punishment.”

However, they didn’t listen to him and killed the camel:

“When Our command was carried out, We saved Ṣālih and the believers with him from the disgrace of that day by our mercy. Indeed, your Lord is All-Strong, All-Mighty.”

“And the Cry struck the wrongdoers, so they fell lifeless in their homes.”

“[They were removed] as if they had not lived there. [O people!] Know that [the tribe of] Thamūd disbelieved in their Lord. May Thamūd be far away [from God’s mercy]!”

Then comes the story of the prophet Ibrahim, where two angels came and told him about the great news of the birth of Isaac and Jacob. When his wife Sara asked how could that happen as they both have grown old, the angels replied:

“They replied, “Are you surprised at God’s command? His mercy and blessings be upon you, people of the house. Indeed, He is the Praised, the Glorious.”

Then they told the prophet Ibrahim about what will happen to the people of a lot and their punishment, so he said what about the prophet Lot and the good people among them, the answer was:

‘O Abraham, let this matter alone! Your Lord’s edict has certainly come, and an irrevocable punishment shall overtake them.’
