What is the Dua for going to sleep? | Noor Academy

before we do anything in life we ask Allah for his protection, therefore we will learn the best dua for going to sleep.

What is the dua for sleeping?

Dua for going to sleep is a sunnah of the prophet to remember Allah and recite supplications before sleeping, and we should do the same, so, here are some of the dua for sleeping.

Bismika rabbee wadaaatu janbee wabika arfaAAuh, fa-in amsakta nafsee farhamha, wa-in arsaltaha fahfathha bima tahfathu bihi aaibadakas-saliheen

In Your name, my Lord, I lie down, and in Your name, I rise, so if You should take my soul then have mercy upon it, and if You should return my soul then protect it in the manner You do so with Your righteous servants.

This is a great Dua to ask Allah for his protection and to remind us we belong to Allah, and he is the only one who can give life or take it away.

Allahumma innaka khalaqta nafsee wa-anta tawaffaha, laka mamatuha wamahyaha in ahyaytaha fahfathha, wa-in amattaha faghfir laha. Allahumma innee as-alukal-AAafiyah.

O Allah, verily You have created my soul, and You shall take its life, to You belongs its life and death. If You should keep my soul alive, then protect it, and if You should take its life, then forgive it. O Allah, I ask You to grant me good health.’

Allahumma qinee Asathabaka yawma tabaaathu Aaibadak.

O Allah, protect me from Your punishment on the day Your servants are resurrected.

 Allah-humma bi-ismika amootu wa-ahya.

In Your name O Allah, I live and die.

Alhamdu lillahil-lathee atAAamana wasaqana, wakafana, wa-awana, fakam mimman la kafiya lahu wala muwee.

All praise is for Allah, Who fed us and gave us drink, and Who is sufficient for us and has sheltered us, for how many have none to suffice them or shelter them.

What is the dua before sleeping?

Allahumma AAalimal-ghaybi washshahadah, fatiras-samawati wal-ard, rabba kulli shayin wamaleekah, ashhadu an la ilaha illa ant, aAAoothu bika min sharri nafsee wamin sharrish-shaytani washirkih, wa-an aqtarifa AAala nafsee soo-an aw ajurrahu ila muslim.

O Allah, Knower of the seen and the unseen, Creator of the heavens and the earth, Lord and Sovereign of all things I bear witness that none has the right to be worshipped except You. I take refuge in You from the evil of my soul and from the evil and shirk of the devil, and from committing wrong against my soul or bringing such upon another Muslim.’ shirk: to associate others with Allah in those things which are specific to Him. This can occur in belief, e.g. to believe that other than Allah has the power to benefit or harm, speech, e.g. to swear by other than Allah, and action, e.g. to bow or prostrate to other than Allah.

Allahumma aslamtu nafsee ilayk, wafawwadtu amree ilayk, wawajjahtu wajhee ilayk, wa-alja/tu thahree ilayk, raghbatan warahbatan ilayk, la maljaa wala manja minka illa ilayk, amantu bikitabikal-lathee anzalt, wabinabiyyikal-lathee arsalt.

O Allah, I submit my soul unto You, and I entrust my affair unto You, and I turn my face towards You, and I totally rely on You, in hope and fear of You. Verily there is no refuge nor safe haven from You except with You. I believe in Your Book which You have revealed and in Your Prophet whom You have sent.

Allaahu laa ‘ilaaha ‘illaa Huwal-Hayyul-Qayyoom, laa ta’khuthuhu sinatun wa laa nawm, lahu maa fis-samaawaati wa maafil-‘ardh, man thal-lathee yashfa’u ‘indahu ‘illaa bi’ithnih, ya’lamu maa bayna ‘aydeehim wa maa khalfahum, wa laa yuheetoona bishay’im-min ‘ilmihi ‘illaa bimaa shaa’a, wasi’a kursiyyuhus-samaawaati wal’ardh, wa laa ya’ooduhu hifdhuhumaa, wa Huwal-‘Aliyyul- ‘Adheem

Allah! There is none worthy of worship but He, the Ever Living, the One Who sustains and protects all that exists. Neither slumber nor sleep overtakes Him. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who is he that can intercede with Him except with His Permission? He knows what happens to them in this world, and what will happen to them in the Hereafter. And they will never compass anything of His Knowledge except that which He wills. His Throne extends over the heavens and the earth, and He feels no fatigue in guarding and preserving them. And He is the Highest, the Greatest.

Sunnahs before sleeping.

Dua for going to sleep is a sunnah to do the following before going to bed:

  •       Perform wudhu.
  •       Brush your teeth.
  •       Dust of your bed and pillow three times from any dust.
  •       Sleep on your right side.
  •       Ask Allah for his protection and forgiveness.

 Dua upon lying down.

Dua before sleeping is important to protect us and help us to have a good day when waking up the next day, therefore, here are the best dua for sleep.

Supplication for Sleeping

The Messenger believes in what has been sent down to him from his Lord, and so do the believers. Each one believes in Allah, His Angels, His Books, and His Messengers. They say: “We make no distinction between any of His Messengers,” and they say: “We hear, and we obey. (We seek) Your Forgiveness, our Lord, and to You is the return.” Allah burdens not a person beyond what he can bear. He gets a reward for that (good) which he has earned, and he is punished for that (evil) which he has earned. Our Lord! Punish us not if we forget or fall into error. Our Lord! Lay not on us a burden like that which You did lay on those before us. Our Lord! Put not on us a burden greater than we have the strength to bear. Pardon us and grant us forgiveness. Have mercy on us. You are our Protector, and help us against the disbelieving people.

Glory is to Allah (say it thirty-three times), praise is to Allah (thirty-three times), Allah is the Most Great (thirty-three times)

O, Allah! Lord of the seven heavens and Lord of the Magnificent Throne. Our Lord and the Lord of everything. Splitter of the grain and the date-stone, Revealer of the Torah and the Injeel1 and the Furqan (the Qur’an), I seek refuge in You from the evil of everything that You shall seize by the forelock.2 O Allah You are the First and nothing has come before you, and You are the Last, and nothing may come after You. You are the Highest, nothing is above You and You are the Most Near and nothing is nearer than You. Remove our debts from us and enrich us against poverty.

O Allah, Knower of the unseen and the evident, Maker of the heavens and the earth, Lord of everything and its Master, I bear witness that there is none worthy of worship but You. I seek refuge in You from the evil of my soul and from the evil of Satan and his helpers. (I seek refuge in You) from bringing evil upon my soul and from harming any Muslim.

5- One of the best dua before sleep is Reciting ayatul kursi.

ayatul kursi before sleep hadith: The Prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) said: “When you are about to sleep recite ayat-al-kursee (The verse of the foot-stool, chapter 2:255) till the end of the verse for there will remain over you a protection from Allah and no devil will draw near to you until morning.”

{اللّهُ لاَ إِلَـهَ إِلاَّ هُوَ الْحَيُّ الْقَيُّومُ لاَ تَأْخُذُهُ سِنَةٌ وَلاَ نَوْمٌ لَّهُ مَا فِي السَّمَاوَاتِ وَمَا فِي الأَرْضِ مَن ذَا الَّذِي يَشْفَعُ عِنْدَهُ إِلاَّ بِإِذْنِهِ يَعْلَمُ مَا بَيْنَ أَيْدِيهِمْ وَمَا خَلْفَهُمْ وَلاَ يُحِيطُونَ بِشَيْءٍ مِّنْ عِلْمِهِ إِلاَّ بِمَا شَاء وَسِعَ كُرْسِيُّهُ السَّمَوَاتِ وَالأَرْضَ وَلاَ يَؤُودُهُ حِفْظُهُمَا وَهُوَ الْعَلِيُّ الْعَظِيمُ }

Allah! There is no god ˹worthy of worship˺ except Him, the Ever-Living, All-Sustaining. Neither drowsiness nor sleep overtakes Him. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who could possibly intercede with Him without His permission? He ˹fully˺ knows what is ahead of them and what is behind them, but no one can grasp any of His knowledge—except what He wills ˹to reveal˺. His Seat1 encompasses the heavens and the earth, and the preservation of both does not tire Him. For He is the Highest, the Greatest.

Surahs we can read before sleeping.

Aisyah narrated that the Prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) used to do the following: “Every night before Rasulullah s.a.w. slept on his bed, he cupped his hands together hands (in making du’aa) and blew on them and recited (the surahs of) AI-Ikhlas, AI-Falaq, and An-Naas and wiped those parts of the body that he could (wherever the hand could reach). He began with the head, then the face, and then the front part of his body. This was done thrice.”

Among the Dua for going to sleep that you could say is reciting the three Quls, here they are:

1-  Surah Al-Ikhlas.

Qul huwa Allahu ahad

Say: He is Allah, the One!

Min sharri maa khalaq

From the evil of that which He created

Wa min sharri ghaasiqin iza waqab

And from the evil of the night when it grows dark

Wa min sharrin-nafaathati fil ‘uqad

And from the evil of malignant witchcraft

Wa min sharri haasidin iza hasad

And from the evil of the envier when he envies.

 3- Surah An-Naas.

Qul a’uzu birabbin-naas

Say, I seek refuge with the Lord of mankind

Min sharril waswaasil khannaas

Against the harm of the sneaking whisperer

Allazee yuwaswisu fee sudoorin-naas

Who whispers into the hearts of humankind

Minal jinnati wan-naas

From among the jinn and humankind

 Muslim night prayer before sleep

Night prayer is known to have many benefits to the one who prays it. Its importance comes in second after obligatory prayers. We can see its benefits in the holy Quran and in the hadiths.

“And from [part of] the night, pray with it as additional [worship] for you; it is expected that your Lord will resurrect you to a praised station.” (Quran, 17:79)

When you pray Salah al Tahajjud regularly Allah will bless you, and it will bring you closer to Allah. And you will have a feeling of calmness and peace, all your worries and anxiety will go away.

“And they who pass the night prostrating themselves before their Lord and standing.” (Quran, 25:64)

The prophet said:

“Two units of prayer performed at night are more beneficial than anything in the world. If I thought that it would not be a burden on my people I would enjoin it on them.” (Fadail al-Amal, 257).

“Fast on a very hot day for the Day of Judgment. Offer a prayer of two units at night to be saved from loneliness in the grave. Make the journey to Qabah once in a lifetime, and give alms to a needy person for the great occasions of Doomsday. Say just words or save your tongue from saying unjust things!” (ibn Abi’d-Dunya, Kitab al-Tahajjud).

Also, the prophet said to Abu Hurayra about the importance of praying Tahajjud the following:

“O Abu Hurayra! If you want the company of the Mercy of Allah when in the grave and on the Doomsday, wake up at night to offer a prayer for Allah’s sake. O Abu Hurayra! If you pray at the corner of your house, your house lightens as a constellation in the sky, and it becomes like a star for the people of the world.” (Ihya al-Ulumiddin, I, 1023).

Best surah to listen to before sleep.

Among the best surahs to recite or listen to before sleeping are sura al Mulk, Al-Sajdah, Surah Ar Rehman, and Surah waqia.

Tasbeeh before sleep

Dua for going to sleep is a Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessing be upon him) to recite subhanallah, alhamdulillah, and Allahu akbar thirty times before sleeping.

“Our Lord, let not our hearts deviate after You have guided us and grant us from Yourself mercy. Indeed, You are the Bestower.”

Importance of Dua

Here’s what the prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) said about the importance of saying sleeping dua.

The Prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) said: “Whoever recites the last two verses of Soorat Al-Baqarah at night, those two verses shall be sufficient for him (i.e. protect him from all that can cause him harm).”

The Prophet (peace and blessing be upon him)  also said: “When you are about to sleep recite ayat-al-kursee (The verse of the foot-stool, chapter 2:255) till the end of the verse for there will remain over you a protection from Allah and no devil will draw near to you until morning.”

We should recite Dua for going to sleep or Duas at any time to ask Allah for his forgiveness, to repent from the mistakes that we have done, and as a way to remember Allah all the time.
