lessons from the battle of Hunayn.
We learn from the battle of Hunayn that numbers don’t matter as long as we have Allah by our side and we have faith in him. Just like what happened in the battle, Muslims were happy with their numbers and thought that no one could defeat them. However, as soon as they put step into Hunayn they were met by a shower of arrows. All Muslims ran away to hide except a few people who stood by the prophet and didn’t care about what will happen to them. And with Allah’s help, Muslims won the battle.
Allah said in the Holy Quran:
“Allah has helped you on many occasions including the day of Hunayn. When you were happy with the number of your men who proved to be of no help to you and the whole vast earth seemed to have no place to hide you (from your enemies) and you turned back in retreat.” (Surah al-Tawbah, 9:25)

Battle of Hunain summary
Most people of Quraysh entered Islam, but only the tribes of Hawazin and Thaqif refused to accept the message of Allah. Therefore, they decided to fight the prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) and the Muslims. The battle took place on the 8th year of migration to Madinah, on the month of Shawwal.
The Hawazin tribe were idolaters who worshiped idols, refusing to accept Islam and the messenger of Allah. The leader of the tribe Malik ibn Awf Al-Nasri ordered his men to prepare for the fight. And they gathered their women, children, money, and livestock to encourage them to win the fight against Muslims. Which was a famous act done at this time as a way of encouraging soldiers to fight by putting everything they have on the line.
The leader Malik ibn Awf Al-Nasri also sent a spy to spy on the prophet and see if the prophet’s army will outnumber his army. When he learned that the prophet’s army was of 12,000 soldiers, he decided to make a wicked plan to win the fight.
When the prophet heard about what they are planning to do he ordered his men to gather the army. Most of the 12,000 soldiers were the same men who were with him during the journey from Madina to Makkah. While the remaining were the new people of Quraysh who accepted Islam. This was the first time Muslims had such a large army. And they were happy and confident that they will win the fight.
The battle took place in a valley between Mecca and Taif. When the prophet’s (peace and blessing be upon him) army reached the place, they were met by a shower of arrows.
Ibn Ishaq, Jabir Ibn Abdullah who was part of the army in the Battle of Hunain, said:
“When we approached the valley of Hunain, we came down through a valley wide and sloping. We were descending gradually in the morning twilight. The enemy had got there before us and had hidden in it by paths and side tracks and narrow places. They had collected and were fully prepared and by Allah, we were terrified when, as we were coming down, the squadrons attacked us as one man, the people fled none heeding the other.
The men ran away except that a number of Muhajreen (Muslims who migrated with the Prophet (S.A.W.) from Makkah to Madinah) and Ansar (Muslim residents of Madinah) and men of his family remained with the Messenger of Allah (S.A.W.). Abu Bakr Siddiq (R.A.), Umar Ibn Khattab (R.A.), Ali Ibn Talib (R.A.), Al-Abbas bin Abdullah (R.A.), Abu Fadl Al-Abbas (R.A.), Usamah Ibn Zaid (R.A.) and Abu Sufyan were amongst the Muhajireen who stood firm with the Prophet (peace and blessing be upon him).
The army started to run away for their lives not caring about what will happen to the prophet, leaving him with only a few men. The prophet tried to soothe them but in no vain. Even though the prophet stood firm in his place having faith in Allah. knowing that everything is in the hands of Allah. in order for the prophet to calm the men he said: “I am the Prophet of Allah and never tell a lie and Allah has promised me victory.”
This statement reminded them of what they are truly fighting for, and they came back believing in Allah and his messenger. When the battle of Hunayn took place, it ended with the Muslim’s victory as the tribes of Hawazin and Thaqif couldn’t defeat the Muslim army, who were equipped with their faith in Allah.
The leader of the Hawazin tribe and the rest of the remaining men fled to Autas and Nakhlah and to the forts of Ta’if leaving all the women and children behind.
