Why do we say sallallahu alaihi wasallam? | Noor Academy

We say sallallahu alaihi wasallam as means to send prayers upon the prophet (peace and blessing be upon him).

Allah instructed us in the holy Quran to send Salwat (prayers) upon the prophet in the following verse of surah Ahzab:
إِنَّ اللَّهَ وَمَلَائِكَتَهُ يُصَلُّونَ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ ۚ يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا صَلُّوا عَلَيْهِ وَسَلِّمُوا تَسْلِيمًا

“Allah s.w.t and His angels send Selawat on the Prophet s.a.w: O you who believe! Send your Selawat upon him and salute him with all respect” (Surah Al Ahzab, 33:56)
From this verse, we can see clearly that Allah and the Angels send prayers to the prophet. And we should do the same. Now let’s see the benefits of sending prayer to the prophet. And who to do so.
Why do we say sallallahu alaihi wasallam?
We say sallallahu alayhi wa sallam to send blessings and peace upon the prophet. whenever we mention the prophet or his name, we should send prayer upon him.

But why do we say salallahu alayhi wasalam? It’s one of the acts of worshipping that bring us closer to Allah. As Allah said in the holy Quran:

“Allah sends His Salât (Graces, Honours, Blessings, Mercy) on the Prophet (Muhammad (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him)) and also His angels (ask Allah to bless and forgive him). O you who believe! Send your Salât on (ask Allah to bless) him (Muhammad (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him)), and (you should) greet (salute) him with the Islamic way of greeting (salutation i.e. As¬Salâmu ‘Alaikum)” [al-Ahzaab 33:56].

The prophet himself (peace and blessing be upon him) instructed us to send prayers upon him. Sending prayers to the prophet brings us many rewards and gain us forgiveness for all the sins we have committed.

The prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said:
“Whoever sends blessings upon me once, Allah will send blessings upon him tenfold and will erase from him ten misdeeds and raise him ten degrees in status.”

At-Tirmidhi narrated that Ubayy ibn Ka‘b (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “I said: O Messenger of Allah, I want to send more blessings upon you (before offering supplication); how much of my supplication should I allocate to that?
He said: “Whatever you wish.”

I said: One quarter?

He said, “Whatever you wish, but if you do more, it will be better for you.”

I said: Half?

He said: “Whatever you wish but if you do more, it will be better for you.”

I said: Two-thirds?

He said: “Whatever you wish, but if you do more, it will be better for you.”

I said: Shall I make all of my supplication for that?

He said: Then your worries will be taken care of and your sin will be forgiven.”

From the first hadith, we can see clearly that saying sallallahu alaihi wasallam one time brings us ten rewards. And from the second hadith, we understand that all our sins will be forgiven and our worries will go away.

In another hadith, it is said that sending prayer upon the prophet will raise our degree in heaven 10 degrees. We will be rewarded with good deeds and 10 sins will be erased.

Praying on the prophet one time, Allah will send us blessings ten times, and ten of the mistakes we committed will be erased.

It was narrated by Anas ibn Malik that the prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) said: ”If someone sends one prayer upon me, Allah sends ten prayers upon him, He erases for him ten mistakes, and He raises him ten degrees.”

For our wish to come true, we should send prayer and blessings on the prophet (peace and blessing be upon him).

The prophet (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) will intercede for the person who sends prayer upon him on the day of judgment.

The prayer you send on the prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) will make you close to the prophet on the day of judgment. Not just that, Allah and the Angels will send blessings upon you to purify your heart from all the bad deeds.

Whenever you forget something and say peace and blessing be upon the prophet you will remember it if Allah wills. You will be saved from poverty, and Allah will guide you to the right path. Furthermore, you will earn Allah’s mercy.

Once you send prayers on the prophet; angels will go to the prophet and show him your name.

Anas narrated that the Prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) said,

“Jibril summoned me and said: ‘If someone sends one prayer upon you, Allah will send ten prayers upon him, and He will raise him ten degrees.’”

  •       salla allahu alayhi wasallam

To write sallallahu alaihi wasallam in Arabic you should write it as follows:
صَلَّى اللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ
There is another way that you will see a lot in hadiths and it is as follows: (ﷺ). It is the same as “صَلَّى اللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ” but written in a different style to make it look shorter. You can write it however you like.
Sallallahu alaihi wasallam benefits.
There are many benefits of saying Sallallahu alaihi wasallam. Whenever you say Sallallahu alaihi wasallam one time you will get 10 rewards, 10 of your bad deeds will be erased, and your degree will be raised 10 degrees in heaven.

The prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) said:

مَنْ صَلَّى عَلَيَّ صَلاَةً صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ بِهَا عَشْراً

“Whoever sends Salawat upon me once, will be blessed for it by Allah ten times.”

Another version of the hadith says:

من صلَّى عليَّ صلاةً واحدةً صلَّى اللَّهُ عليهِ عشرَ صلواتٍ، وحُطَّت عنهُ عَشرُ خطيئاتٍ، ورُفِعَت لَهُ عشرُ درجاتٍ

“Whoever sends Selawat upon me once, will be blessed by it tenfold, erased by it ten sins, and raised by it ten degrees in status”.

Praying on the prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wasallam) will get us closer to him in the afterlife. And it will get us closer to Allah as it’s one of the means of worshipping. The prophet said:

“The person closest to me on the Day of Resurrection is the one who sent the most Selawat upon me.”

Furthermore, everything that is worrying and stressing you will go away. Ubay ibn Ka’ab narrated:

“O Messenger of Allah, I frequently invoke Allah to send Selawat upon you. How much of my supplication should I devote to you (Selawat)?” He said, “You may devote as much as you wish.”

When I suggested “a quarter”, he said, “Do whatever you wish, but it will be better for you if you increase it.” I suggested “a half”, he replied, “Do whatever you wish, but it will be better for you if you increase it.” I suggested “two-thirds”, he then said, “Do whatever you wish but it will be better for you if you increase it.” I said, “Shall I devote all my supplications to send Selawat upon you?” He said, “Then you will be freed from your worries and your sins will be forgiven.”

Sending prayer to the prophet purifies one’s heart and earn us many rewards. The prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) said:
صَلُّوا عَلَيَّ فَإِنَّهَا زَكَاةٌ لَكُمْ
“Send the Selawat upon me, for verily it is a purification for you.”

Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported:

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, “Whenever someone greets me, Allah returns the soul to my body (in the grave) and I return his greeting.”
And what do we want more than Allah instructing us in the holy Quran to send Selawat upon the prophet.

“Allah s.w.t and His angels send Selawat on the Prophet s.a.w: O you who believe! Send your Selawat upon him and salute him with all respect” (Surah Al Ahzab, 33:56)
How to send salwat to the prophet?

Abu Muhammad Ka’b bin ‘Ujrah (May Allah be pleased with him) narrated:

The Prophet (ﷺ) came to us and we asked him, “O Messenger of Allah, we already know how to greet you (i.e., say As-salamu ‘alaikum), but how should we supplicate for you?” He (ﷺ) said, “Say: ‘Allahumma salli ‘ala Muhammadin, wa ‘ala ‘ali Muhammadin, kama sallaita ‘ala ‘ali Ibrahima, innaka Hamidum Majid. Allahumma barik ‘ala Muhammadin, wa ‘ala ‘ali Muhammadin, kama barakta ‘ala ‘ali Ibrahima, innaka Hamidum Majid [O Allah, exalt the mention of Muhammad and the family of Muhammad as you exalted the family of Ibrahim. You are Praised and Glorious. O Allah, bless Muhammad and the family of Muhammad as You blessed the family of Ibrahim. You are Praised and Glorious.”

“O Allah! Send Your mercy on Muhammad and on the family of Muhammad, as You sent Your mercy on Abraham and on the family of Abraham, for You are the Most Praise-worthy, the Most Glorious. O, Allah! Send Your blessings on Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, as You sent your blessings on Abraham and on the family of Abraham, for You are the Most Praise-worthy, the Most Glorious.”
