The prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) said about it: “It is a blessing, and it is food that satisfies.” In another version of the hadith, the prophet said: “It is a blessing and a cure for the sick.”
There are still more benefits and virtues that we will discover in this article but first let’s learn the right way of drinking water Zamzam.
How to drink Zamzam water?
The scholars agreed that it’s a sunnah to face the Kabah when drinking the water of Zamzam, sit down, say, Bismillah, drink it three times, and praise Allah. The sunnah of drinking any drink is to sit down, say bismillah, drink it three times, not at one time, and when you finish say Alḥamdulillah (All praise is for God).
But it’s also allowed to drink Zamzam water while standing as said in the following hadith:
Ibn `Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “I gave the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) Zamzam water to drink while he was standing”
The Prophet (peace and blessings upon him) also said: “The water of Zamzam is for whatever purpose it is drunk for.”
Therefore the scholars recommend that we should make dua, and wish for anything we want with pure faith in Allah that it will come true. And sprinkle some of the Zamzam water on our face head and chest.
The prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) said about the right way of drinking Zam-Zam water: “When you drink from Zam Zam, turn to face the qiblah and mention the name of Allah, drink three draughts and drink your fill of it. When you have finished, then praise Allah.

zam zam water has many benefits for the one who drinks it.
The prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) said about it: “It is a blessing, and it is food that satisfies.” In another version of the hadith, the prophet said: “It is a blessing and a cure for the sick.” Therefore, you should drink the water Zamzam when you can.
The meaning of the second part of the hadith is “and it is food that satisfies.” This means that drinking the water of Zam Zam satisfies one’s hunger. Abu Dharr al-Ghifari narrated that he hasn’t eaten anything during his stay in Makkah and only drank Zamzam water and he didn’t feel any hunger.
Al-`Abbas ibn ‘Abd al-Muttalib said: “The people used to compete over Zamzam during the time of Jahiliyyah. People who had children used to bring them and give them to drink, and this was their early-morning victuals. We used to think that it was a help for people who had children.”
Al-‘Abbas said: “During the Jahiliyyah, Zamzam was known as Shaba’ah (satisfaction).”
Al-‘Allamah al-Abbi said: “(The water) is for whatever purpose it is drunk for, and Allah made it food and drink for Isma’il and his mother Hajar .”
You can take Zamzam water with you when going back home for your friends and family, as it has the ability to heal diseases. It’s also a great gift for loved ones who aren’t capable of going to hajj or Umra.
Aishah narrated that she took Zamzam water home with her in bottles, and said, “The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) took some of it away with him, and he used to pour it on the sick, and give it to them to drink.”
When drinking the water of Zamzam you should make dua and wish for anything you want with trust and faith in Allah and your wish shall be granted. Ibn `Abbas said that when he drank the water he said: “O Allah, I ask you for beneficial knowledge, plentiful provision, and healing from every disease.”
Al-Daynuri narrated that al-Humaydi said: “We were with Sufyan ibn ‘Uyaynah, and he told us the hadith about the water of Zamzam being drunk for whatever purpose it is drunk for. A man got up and left the gathering, then he came back and said, ‘O Abu Muhammad, is the hadith which you told us about the water of Zamzam sahih?’ He said, ‘Yes.’ The man said, ‘Just now I drank a bucket of Zamzam so that you would tell me one hundred hadiths.’ Sufyan said, ‘Sit down,’ so he sat down and he told him one hundred hadiths.”
Ibn al-Qayyim said: “Myself and others tried seeking healing with Zamzam water and saw wondrous things. I sought healing with it from a number of illnesses, and I was healed by the permission of Allah. I saw someone who nourished himself with it for a number of days, half a month or more, and he did not feel hunger; he performed Tawaaf along with the other people just as they did. And he told me that he consumed nothing but Zamzam water for forty days and he had the strength to have intercourse with his wife, too fast and to perform Tawaaf numerous times.”
There is no mention of Zamzam water in Quran, but there are many hadiths about its benefits like you saw.
Where does Zamzam water come from?
Zam-Zam is a well of 30 m depth. It’s a miracle that Allah gave to the wife of the Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him), Hagar to quench the thirst of her son. and now it’s a source of water that quenches the thirst of all the pilgrims every year.
The story of Zamzam water.
The wife of the Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him), Hagar was alone in the desert with her son Isma’il. She had no water or food. When Isma’il (peace be upon him) felt thirsty he started crying, therefore, Hagar climbed up and down al-Safa and al-Marwah seven times and each time, she prayed for Allah to help her quench the thirst of her son. That was when the angel Jibril struck the earth with his heels and the water Zam-zam appeared.
Dua for drinking Zamzam water.
Our beloved prophet instructed us to make dua (supplication) when drinking Zamzam water. You can wish for anything you want. And remember to recite Bism Allah before drinking it and Alḥamdulillah when you finish drinking.
You could also recite the Dua that Ibn Abbas used to recite, here it’s:
“Allaahumma inni as’aluka `ilman naifi`aaa, wa rizqaw wasi`aaa, wa shifa’am min kulli da’i.”
“O Allah! I ask you for beneficial knowledge, plentiful sustenance, and cure from every illness.”
