Why was surah Fussilat revealed? | Noor Academy

Surah Fussilat is also called “Ha Meem Sajdah” and in English, it means “expounded/ explain in detail, or Ha Meem prostration”.

Before we know why the surah was revealed let’s first learn its history. according to narration, one day the prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) was setting in Masjid al-Haram and some of the chiefs of Quraish were also setting there.

The people of Quraish were angry because more people are accepting Islam. So Utbah bin Rabi’ah who is the father-in-law of Abu Sufyan said to the chiefs of Quraish:

“Gentlemen, if you like I would go and speak to Muhammad (upon whom be Allah’s peace and blessings) and put before him some proposals; maybe that he accepts one of them, to which we may also agree, and so he stops opposing us.”

They all approved and he went to the Prophet (peace and blessing be upon him), sat next to him, and said:
“Nephew, you know the high status that you enjoy in the community by virtue of your ancestry and family relations, but you have put your people to great trouble: you have created divisions among them and you consider them to be fooled: you talk ill of their religion and gods, and say things as though all our forefathers were pagans. Now listen to me and I shall make some suggestions. Consider them well: maybe you accept one of them.”
The Holy Prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) said: “Abul Walid, say what you want to say and I shall listen to you.”
He said, “Nephew, if by what you are doing, you want wealth, we will give you enough of it so that you will be the richest man among us; if you want to became an important man, we will make you our chief and will never decide a matter without you; if you want to be a king, we will accept you as our king; and if you are visited by a jinn, whom you cannot get rid of by your own power, we will arrange the best physicians and have you treated at our own expense.”
He continued and the prophet listened and then asked ‘Utbah: “Have you said, O Abul Walid, what you had to say?”

‘Utbah said that he did. Then the prophet said: “Well, now listen to me.” And he recited surah Fussilat, Utbah kept listening. When the prophet reached the Sajdah, he prostrated then he raised his hands and said:

“This was my reply, O Abul Walid, now you may act as you please.”

Utbah then arose from his place and walked back to the people of Quraish. When they saw him coming, they said: “By God! Utbah’s face is changed. He does not look the same man that he was when he went from here.”

When he sat down, they asked him: “What have you heard?” He replied, “By God! I have heard something the like of which I had never heard before. By God, it’s neither poetry, nor sorcery, nor magic. O chiefs of the Quraish, listen to what I say and leave this man to himself. I think what he recites is going to have its effect. If the other Arabs overcome him, you will be saved from raising your hand against your brother, and the others will deal with him. But if he overcame Arabia, his sovereignty would be your sovereignty and his honor your honor.”

When he said that the chiefs said: “You too, O father of Walid, have been bewitched by his tongue.”

Utbah replied, “I have given you my opinion; now you may act as you please.”

It was also said that when the prophet reached verse 13: “If they turn away, say to them: I warn you of a thunderbolt the like of which had visited the Ad and the Thamud,”

Utbah had spontaneously placed his hand on the Holy Prophet’s mouth, and said: “For God’s sake, have mercy on your people.” Afterward, he justified his action before the Quraish chiefs, saying: “You know that whatever Muhammad says is always fulfilled; therefore, I feared lest a torment should descend on us.”

surah fussilat mishary

Why was surah Fussilat revealed?
Because the people of Quraish kept trying to misconstrue the verses of the Quran. denying that the Quran was sent by Allah and that the prophet is the messenger of Allah. therefore Allah revealed Surah Fussilat to show them the truth and to warn them.
Narrated Ibn Mas’ud (رضي الله عنه)

“Three men whose bellies were fat, but whose hearts had little understanding, were arguing at the House. Two of them were from Quraish and one was from Thaqif – or two from Thaqif, and one from Quraish. One of them said: ‘Do you think that Allah can hear what we are saying?’ Another said: ‘He can hear if we are loud, but He can not hear when we are quiet.’ Another said: ‘If He can hear when we are loud then He can hear when we are quiet.’ So Allah, the Mighty and Sublime revealed:

وما كنتم تستترون أن يشهد عليكم سمعكم ولا أبصاركم ولا جلودكم

And you have not been hiding yourselves, lest your ears and your eyes and your skins should testify against you (41:22).

Surah al Fussilat benefits.
The prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) said: “Everything has its fruit and benefits, and the fruit of the Qur’an is Ha-Meem (Surah Fussilat).”
Khalil bin Murah narrated:

“The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessing be upon him) would not go to sleep until he recited Surah Tabaraka Allathee (Surah 67 Al-Mulk) and Ha Mim as-Sajdah (Surah 41 Fussilat)”

Imam Hakim Tirmizi (رحمه الله) narrated from ‘Abdur Rahman bin Abi Bakr (رضي الله عنه) in Nawadir al-Usool:

I came to visit Hazrat Aisha (رضي الله عنها) while revelations were coming to the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم). The revelation then stopped. The Prophet said,” O Aisha give me my cloak”, and she did so. Then he went to the mosque and there he saw a man who was giving some advice. The Prophet sat down till the man finished his discourse. Then he started to recite Surah Fussilat. He made a long prostration. The people nearby saw this so Aisha sent a message to the Prophet that since she started living with him, she had never seen such a thing.

The Prophet raised his head from the long prostration and said, “It was to thank my Lord because He has done a favor for my Ummah.” Hazrat Abu Bakr as-Siddiq (رضي الله عنه) said, “What did Allah bestow upon you about your Ummah?” He said Allah gave me the blessing that He will admit 70,000 persons from my Ummah to Paradise without account. Hazrat Abu Bakr as-Siddiq (رضي الله عنه) said,  “O Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم), your Ummah is more and pure, ask your Lord for increase. The Messenger of Allah said, “I had done this, so Allah granted 70,000 people with each of the persons.” Hazrat Abu Bakr as-Siddiq (رضي الله عنه) said, “O Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم), ask more for your Ummah.” The Prophet made a gesture with his hand and then put it on his chest. Hazrat Umar (رضي الله عنه) said, O Messenger of Allah, I have memorized it.”
Surah al fussilat tafseer
Here’s the tafsir of the first verse of surah Fussilat:

﴿حـم – تَنزِيلٌ مِّنَ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ ﴾

(Ha Mim. A revelation from the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.) means, the Qur’an is revealed from the Most Gracious, Most Merciful. This is like the Ayat:

﴿قُلْ نَزَّلَهُ رُوحُ الْقُدُسِ مِن رَّبِّكَ بِالْحَقِّ﴾

(Say Ruh Al-Qudus (Jibril) has brought it down from your Lord with truth) (16:102).

(And truly, this is a revelation from the Lord of all that exists, Which the trustworthy Ruh (Jibril) has brought down upon your heart that you may be (one) of the warners.) (26:192-194).

(A Book whereof the Ayat is explained in detail) means, its meanings are clear and its rulings are sound and wise.

(a Qur’an in Arabic) means because it is a clear Arabic Qur’an, its meanings are precise and detailed and its words are clear and not confusing. This is like the Ayah:

﴿كِتَابٌ أُحْكِمَتْ ءايَـتُهُ ثُمَّ فُصِّلَتْ مِن لَّدُنْ حَكِيمٍ خَبِيرٍ﴾

((This is) a Book, the Ayat whereof are completed, and then explained in detail from One (Allah), Who is All-Wise Well-Acquainted) (11:1). meaning, it is miraculous in its wording and in its meaning.

(Falsehood cannot come to it from before it or behind it, (it is) sent down by the All-Wise, Worthy of all praise.) (41:42).

(for people who know.) means, this clear style will be readily understood by scholars who are thoroughly versed in knowledge.

(Giving glad tidings and warning,) means, sometimes it brings glad tidings to the believers, and sometimes it brings a warning to the disbelievers.

(but most of them turn away, so they hear not.) means, most of the Quraysh did not understand anything of it at all, despite the fact that it was so clear.

(And they say: “Our hearts are under coverings…”) meaning, they are wrapped and screened,

(from that to which you invite us, and in our ears is deafness,) means, `we are deaf to the message you bring to us.’

(and between us and you is a screen,) `so nothing of what you say reaches us.’

(so work you (on your way); verily, we are working) means, go your way, and we will go our way, and we will not follow you.
