How to wiping over the khuffs? | Noor Academy

Islam is the religion of simplicity not difficulty, wiping over the khuffs is one of the rulings that is made to perform wudu easily.
Sometimes or most of the time we’re at work or outside the house, and taking off our shoes or socks to perform Wudu isn’t easy. That’s when we start wondering, “is it permissible to perform Wudu with socks or not?”
Islam makes a ruling for every case to ease our lives, and that includes ablution. For example, let’s say you want to perform Wudu but you can’t take off khuffs because the ground is not clean, that’s when you choose to wipe over the khuff instead of taking it off.
Now, let’s understand the khuffain meaning, the conditions of wiping over, and how to do so.

What is the meaning of Khuff?
khuff meaning in Islam is what covers the feet like socks or shoes.

Khuff meaning.
Khuff is what you wear to protect your feet like socks or shoes and it could be made of various materials and shapes.
Wiping over the Khuff o socks during ablution is permissible as stated by many scholars and hadiths. Especially if you can’t remove them because the ground is not clean or if there are any hazardous materials on the ground.
The Prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) used to wipe over the Khuff whether at home or on a journey.

Al-Hasan  (may  Allah  have  mercy  upon  him) said: “I was told by seventy of the Companions of Allah’s Messenger ( peace and blessing be upon him) that he used to wipe over his Khuffs (with his wet hands during ablution).”
Imam An-Nawawi (may  Allah  have  mercy  upon  him) said, “The permissibility of wiping over the Khuffs was reported by innumerable Companions.”
Imam Ahmad (may  Allah  have  mercy  upon  him) said: “There is not a shadow of doubt in my mind concerning the legality of wiping over the Khuffs, as there are forty Hadeeths of the Prophet ( peace and blessing be upon him) indicating its permissibility.”

Based on the hadeeths and scholars’ agreements, wiping over the socks is permissible.

How to Wiping over the khuff?
We now know that wiping over khuff socks is allowed and we don’t have to remove them when performing ablution. But how do we wipe over them? The prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) used to wipe over the top of the Khuff.
From this, we understand that we should wipe over the top of the Khuff, not the bottom, or the back of it, or the wiping will be invalid.
Al-Mughirah ibn Shu’bah described how the prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) used to wipe over the Khuff and said:

“I saw the Prophet (peace be upon him) wiping over his khuffs, on their top.”

Ali said

“Had things in religion always been based on logic, the bottom of the khuffs would have been more appropriate to wipe upon than the top. I saw Allah’s messenger wiping over the top of his khuffs.”
Al-Mardaawi said in al-Insaaf: “The Sunnah way of wiping (over the khuffayn) is to put the hands with the fingers outspread on the toes, then draw the hands up towards the shins once on the right and left feet.”

So, the next time when you wipe over the socks, wipe the top of them to be valid. And later on in this article, we will learn the conditions of wiping over it.

Which part of the Khuff must be wiped?
It’s a sunnah to wipe the top of the khuffayn. Also, it is a sunnah to wipe both of the Kuffayn at the same time but it’s not obligatory.
Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen (may Allah have mercy on him) said: “… i.e., what should be wiped is the top of the khuff, so he should pass his hand from the toes up to the shin only, and the wiping should be done with both hands on both feet at the same time, i.e., the right hand should wipe the right foot and the left hand should wipe the left foot at the same time, as the ears are wiped because this is the apparent meaning of the Sunnah.”
It says in al-Talkhees wal-Bulghah: “It is Sunnah to give precedence to the right foot.”
From this, we understand that we should start wiping the right foot first then followed by the left foot.
Al-Bayhaqi narrated that the Prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) wiped over his khuffayn together, “it is as if I can see his fingers on the khuffaayn.”
The meaning of this hadith is that the Prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) used to wipe both Khuffayn at the same time, not one foot preceding the other. However, it’s a sunnah, not obligatory. If you can’t do that then wash one foot at a time.

Al-Mugheerah ibn Shu‘bah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “Then he wiped over them, and he did not say that he started with the right foot, rather he said that he wiped over them. So this is the apparent meaning of the Sunnah. Yes, if we assume that if he cannot use one of his hands, then he should start with the right foot before the left foot. But many people wipe with both hands on the right foot and both hands on the left foot; there is no basis for this as far as I know. … But however, one wipes the top of the khuff is acceptable, but what we are talking about here is what is preferable.”

You might be wondering now, “does that mean that I can’t wash my right foot with the left hand and vice versa?” the answer is that you can, nothing is wrong with doing so. But it’s the sunnah to wash right foot with right hand and left foot with left hand.

What are the periods of wiping over Khuffs?
The period of wiping over the Khuffs is one day and one night if the person is off to a place not far from his house or hometown. But if the person is going for a far place where he is allowed to shorten prayers then the period of wiping over the khuff is three days and nights.

Ali said: “Allah’s messenger permitted three days and nights for a traveler and one day and night for a resident.”

Can I wipe over my feet for wudu?
No, it’s not sufficient to just wipe your feet when performing Wudu, you should wash them. Wiping is only done in the case of wearing Khuffs.

Abd-Allaah ibn ‘Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stayed behind us on a journey and then caught up with us, and we were late in praying ‘Asr. We started doing wudu and wiping out feet, and he called out at the top of his voice: “Woe to the heels from the fire” two or three times.”

Conditions of wiping over socks.
Wiping over socks is permissible but there are some conditions for it to be valid, and here they are:
1.      Perform ablution before wearing the socks or Khuffs (you should have a valid ablution when wearing the socks).

Al-Mughirah reported: “I was accompanying the Prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) on travel, and I went down to help him take off his khuffs, but he said to me: “Leave them on, as I wore them (while in the state of purification and wudhu). He wiped over them.”

2.      the Khuff must be covering the feet and all the parts of the feet that must be washed during Wudu.  Meaning that the Khuff must be covering the feet until the ankles. Otherwise, the wiping will not be valid.
3.      There shouldn’t be any holes in the socks.
4.      It should be thick so that it doesn’t let water in when wiping over it.
